Nemesis Blue XLT-4 - Initial Installation

The order from FineDesign arrived late last week, including the proper motor mounts (2 of them), Nemesis Blue XLT-4 Motor, and the 5mm clutch bell conversion. The initial feeling for this order were that some of the parts feel rather cheap, considering the price-tag that has been placed on them. They are completely functional, and will do their job as intended. The clutch bell conversion comes to mind as the least impressive of the bunch. It was assembled by placing a large 5mm pinion inside the standard LST clutch bell and securing it with a 2 part epoxy. Simple design, very similar to my initial thoughts before I found the order form for the pre-made part. Personally, I was expecting a milled part, of more 1piece rigid quality.

Other components such as the motor and its constituent mounting straps were also included in the order. The motor feels pretty good for an inexpensive brushless motor and included some lamination over the front to keep dirt and debris out of the windings and internals. On the rear of the can, a small piece of Electric tape was placed over the bearing and shaft -- presumably to also keep dust and dirt out. After sealing up the remainder of the open area (around the wires) with some hot glue, the motor was installed in the mounts. It fits like a dream. The Feigao motor (540C-7XL) does not quite fit in the straps, which made my decision not to use it very easy. Overall, the mounting straps bolt right onto the original chassis, but do require 2 holes to be drilled for the rear mounting strap. It is also notable to say that these straps are VERY light metal which will do well for keeping the weight down. It will be interesting to see how they fair in the bashing and driving that will be done with this truck is complete.

Now it is a matter of arranging the components on the Chassis. Finding a place for the Quark 125b, the 2x 7cell NiMH packs, and the required servos and reciever is going to be quite the challenge. Check out some of the progress thus far: Click for larger images.

More Parts - Quark 125b and Feigao 540c-7xl Brushless

Two of the major components for the conversion have arrived. The first is the newly release Quark 125b from Sky and Technology. The brushless ESC is considered to be one of the newest and most full featured brushless controllers available for sensorless motor setups. Capable of running 125 amps of continuous power and handling a peak 300 amp current for 10 seconds! The Feigao 540C-7XL is a 2382kv brushless motor and pulls about 100 amps at its peak efficiency. The combo should provide A LOT more power than the HV-Maxx setup in my previous conversion.

Whether or not to use the Feigao motor is still a decision that has to be made with regard to the design. Another motor has been ordered for this project as well and there is very little information about this other possible candidate (Nemesis Blue XLT-1) for the conversion. It is based on the Nemesis motor design and is capable (according to manufacture specs) of kicking out 2hp at 50,000rpm. Pictures and data, plus more information will be posted on the other motor when it shows up via UPS. Then the decision will have to be made as to which motor will best suit this conversion. The benefit of the Feigao is the Heat Sink style, finned can. The Nemesis only has a smooth blue anodized can. Further discussion to come!

A New Project Is A Brewin'

I took some pictures of a new project that I have concocted this evening. The project is a direct off-shoot of a retail idea that has intrigued me since my earlier conversion truck... Hopefully this one will answer some of the "What ifs?" from the last project. Parts and goodies are still coming together for this one, but a few teaser shots from my freshly scrubbed and lubed chassis are below. This project promises to be even more exciting and in-depth than the last project, which usually means more money. By the end, I'll post specs and prices for those who feel so obliged to try this themselves! As always, if you are here to check out the other conversion truck "LST-Maxx" scroll down to check out the pictures.

Mmm, fresh and clean.

Check out that big empty spot...

All ready for some upgrading!
